The concept originally came about while we were developing a DEF × Canterbury collaboration. The inspiration was the iconic imagery of DOOM with the lizard around his neck, wearing a Canterbury Rugby World Cup jersey — an unexpected but authentic connection with a piece of rugby heritage.
Sadly, DOOM passed away while we were putting the DEF collaboration together. Out of respect, we put the idea on ice and took the project in a different direction.
There was already a personal connection too. When MF DOOM came to New Zealand in 2011, we produced ABC merchandise for his gig, including tees and skate decks, so I always felt a collaboration could genuinely be possible.
The concept brings together DOOM and Canterbury, using photographs by Alex De Mora and hand-drawn artwork by local artist Finn Gerry Wilson.
